PROJECT IA
SITE ANALYSIS &
DESIGN RESPONSE
In groups of 7-8 students, we were required to create 2 poetic structures (one having a linear layout, the other being a concentric layout) based around romanticizing a Malaysian Tropical Beach. The main objective was to convey the beauty of the beach to the user as well as to create a meaningful experience/s that enlightened the user using modifying elements & poetic spatial architecture.
In order to create such spaces, we had to do exhaustive research on poetic precedent studies (ones that we will analyse and potentially use as inspiration for our concepts), what poetic architecture means as well as study what elements/traits form a beach (its essence/genius loci).

The research & analysis formed guidelines as well as ideas as to how the framework (its narrative & journey) would be for such structures. Naturally, it took a lot of butter paper, draft models and constant going back and forth, implementing ideas, solving problems that come with it...etc.

THE DESIGN PROCESS
Initially I found myself struggling to create poetic spaces. Not knowing how to play around with light & shadow as effectively to create the desired effect and at times straying away to ideas that aren't considered architectural. And given the 3 -4 week time period we were set to complete this project on, I hesitated and didn't take enough risks or explore enough, and in the end, I feel theres still a lot of room for improvement as far as poetics go. It however taught me a lot about analysing architecture, working with people with different thought processes, backgrounds & philosophies, and finally poetics as well. I plan to do studies of light & shadow, materiality, reading books from poetic architects as well as analysing more poetic architecture as I feel it would help me find the meaning & ways of execution of poetic architecture.
